Spring Safety: Poison Prevention
Each year, millions of people call poison control centers for medical help with poisoning. Poisoning is a concern regardless of the season, but generally, products that were hidden away – such as chemicals for outdoor use or fertilizers – become more accessible to kids during springtime.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shares valuable advice for families about poison prevention.
At Physicians Premier, your emergency room in Corpus Christi, we are all about keeping you and your loved ones safe. Here’s some information about poison prevention to help you get started.
Medicines
- Keep all potentially poisonous substances – including medicines – out of reach of children, preferably in locked cabinets.
- Do not share prescription medications. If you are taking more than one prescription medicine, it’s best to ask your local healthcare provider about possible drug interactions. You may also call the toll-free Poison Help line (1-800-222-1222).
- Store your medicines appropriately, and keep them properly labeled in their original containers.
Carbon monoxide
- Majority of carbon monoxide poisonings happen in the bedroom and kitchen. Install a working carbon monoxide detector in your home, especially in those areas.
Chemicals and household products
- Keep all potentially poisonous substances out of reach of children.
- Never mix household products and chemicals together. It might create a dangerous gas.
- Never use food containers, like bottles or cups, to store chemicals or household cleaners. Children might think that they are safe to ingest.
- Keep all laundry products in cabinets and out of children’s reach.
- Keep all chemicals in their original containers.
Food
- Use clean utensils for serving and cooking at all times.
- Wash the counters as well as your hands before food preparation.
- Store food at the proper temperatures.
Art supplies
- Some art products are toxic and can be hazardous if not used correctly.
- Wash your skin after using art products.
- Refrain from eating or drinking while using art products.
- Keep your art products in their original containers.
- Clean your desk, table, or counter – any equipment that you used while working on your art project.
Remember that young ones are curious and they tend to experiment with everything. They try to imitate what adults do, so keep these poison prevention tips in mind at all times to keep your family safe.
