Assists the Registered Nurse (RN) and Emergency Room (ER) Physician in providing high-quality care to patients in the emergency department based upon individual patient needs and within the scope of practice outlined below.
• Abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) regarding paramedic scope of practice as well as those set forth by Physicians Premier Emergency Room.
• Provide direct patient care by evaluating patients’ medical complaints and current symptoms and reporting to the ER Physician and the RN.
• Work directly under the ER Physician and RN to assist during exams, procedures, diagnostic testing, and treatments
• Per Physician orders perform blood draws, lab specimen collection, IV initiations, cardiac monitoring, EKG, pulse oximetry, oxygen application, respiratory therapies/nebulizer treatments, wound cleansing and bandaging, suture/staple removal, splint application, direct bedside care of patients within the scope of practice and facility policy
• Recognize potential life-threatening symptoms and/or vital signs exhibited by patients and report abnormal findings immediately to the RN and/or ER Physician.
• Participate in new patient triage by obtaining the chief complaint, history of present illness, past medical history, current medications, allergies, height and weight measurements, vital signs, and other relevant information
• Record all patient medical care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in an appropriate format; and submit to the Patient Service Representative (PSR) to scan into the patient’s medical record. The paramedic will NOT perform and/or document the following sections of the patient chart that may only be completed by the RN: General Patient Assessment, Patient Safety Screening, and Patient Discharge Instructions/Teaching
• Understand the ESI 5-level triage system and prioritize timely and appropriate care to patients based on the level assigned by the RN.
• Assist the ER Physician with procedures including but not limited to laceration repair, incision and drainage, cardiac arrest, intubation, chest tube insertion, foreign body removal, live birth, dislocated joint reduction, and other procedures as delegated.
• Maintain competency in oral intubation and perform as requested by the ER Physician.
• Assist in preparing patients for transfer, activating EMS transport, and preparation of transfer paperwork
• Prepare and administer medications per ER Physician orders, facility policy, and scope of practice. Verify orders and document all relative data in the patient’s electronic medical record. The paramedic must strictly adhere only to medication administrations that have been approved per company policy and only after competency has been evaluated and documented by the nurse manager. Certification of competency is to be obtained through direct observation and training by a Nurse Manager or supervising RN prior to any independent medication administration.
• Reassess all medications administered for efficacy and potential adverse reactions within 15-60 minutes of administration per company policy
• Interact professionally with both patients and their family members and involve them in the formation of the patient’s plan of care
• Assist with moving, ambulating, and lifting patients as needed
• Assist with maintaining a clean facility to ensure a safe and sanitary work environment. Clean and prepare rooms between patients.
• Abide by all established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, infection prevention, and control standards.
• Perform various CLIA/COLA waived lab tests, quality controls, and lab maintenance of equipment/lab setting in accordance with guidelines and regulations as established by CLIA/COLA and company policy. Perform all API competency testing as assigned to maintain lab use certification.
• Ensure adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment
• Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops; show responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by Nurse Manager
• Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.
• Maintains all required certifications and licenses per regulatory standards.
• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
• Maintains regulatory requirements for lab procedures.
• Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
• Attends staff meetings as scheduled by the Nurse Director.
• Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
• Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.
• Actively participates in continuous quality assurance performance improvement (QAPI) activities. • Complies with all organizational policies and procedures set forth by Physicians Premier Management Services.
• Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility.
• Current EMT-P license from the Texas Department of State Health Services (EMT-P). License must be in good standing with no restrictions or pending disciplinary action.
• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an EMT-P or Emergency Room Technician in a pre-hospital or acute care setting.
• BLS certification required at employment.
• ACLS and PALS certification required within six (6) months of employment
• Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Basic computer skills.
